1. a, an "indefinite article"
we use "a" before consonant sounds and we use "an" before vowel sounds. Vowel sounds are "a/e/i/o/u"- a book, a pen, a taxi, etc.

Important notes:
- we say an hour not a hour "because h is not pronounced".

2. abandon "verb"
to leave somebody, especially somebody you are responsible for, with no intention of returning

to be left and no longer wanted, used or needed
- an abandoned house
- The child was found abandoned.
- There was an abandoned car in the middle of the road.

4. ability "noun"
the state of being able to do something
ability to do something = the fact that somebody or something is able to do something
ability to do something = the fact that somebody or something is able to do something
- the ability to walk
- The system has the ability to run more than one program at the same time.

- He is famous, both at home and abroad. (= in his own country and in other countries).
- I'd like to study abroad.

5. able "adjective"
to have the skill, strength, knowledge, etc., needed to do something
- You must be able to speak Japanese for this job.

6. about "preposition"
relating to a particular subject
- I have read a book about business.

9. absence "noun"
when you are not in the place where people expect you to be, or the time that you are away

- The decision was made in my absence. (= while I was not there).
- We did not receive any news during his long absence.

10. absent "adjective"
not at work, school, a meeting, etc., because you are sick or decide not to go
- He is absent from work today.

- If you're absent more than 5 times, you fail the course.
- Love was absent from his childhood.
